Greece and Jordan share no geographical border but connect through a 2 hour 30 minute direct flight between Athens and Amman. In terms of historical range, the two countries cover Classical Greece, the Hellenistic world (Jerash was a Decapolis city), and the Nabataean civilisation, representing three of the most significant cultural chapters in Mediterranean and Near Eastern antiquity.

Why Greece and Jordan Work Together

Greece provides island landscapes, Classical archaeological sites, and a major European gateway with extensive international flight connections. Jordan provides Nabataean rock archaeology, desert landscape, and the lowest accessible point on Earth. The two countries do not overlap in landscape, architecture, or historical period. A traveller who has seen the Parthenon and Santorini in Greece will find Petra and Wadi Rum entirely distinct. The combination suits those interested in ancient civilisations who want to cover both the Aegean world and the Levant in one trip.

What Each Country Covers

Greece (Days 1 to 5)

Athens is the entry point for most packages. The Acropolis with the Parthenon (completed 438 BC) and the New Acropolis Museum form the core Athens program, typically 2 nights. A short flight or 7-hour high-speed ferry connects Athens to Santorini for 2 to 3 nights: Oia village and its caldera views, a caldera boat cruise, and the Akrotiri Bronze Age excavation site. Longer packages add Mykonos (1 to 2 nights) or the classical mainland circuit (Delphi, Olympia).

Jordan (Days 6 to 10 or 14)

Amman is the entry point. Most packages begin with Jerash (48 km north of Amman), a Roman Decapolis city with an intact Oval Plaza, Cardo Maximus, and South Theatre (capacity 3,000). Petra is the centrepiece: the 1.2-km Siq leads to the Treasury, a 40-metre Nabataean facade carved in the 1st century BC. A full Petra day covers the Street of Facades, Royal Tombs, and optionally the Monastery (800 carved steps). Wadi Rum adds a 2-hour 4x4 jeep safari across 720 square kilometres of protected desert. The Dead Sea at 430 metres below sea level is the final stop before departure.

Suggested Route and Duration

10 days: Athens (2 nights) + Santorini (2 nights) + Amman and Jerash (1 night) + Petra (1 night) + Wadi Rum (1 night) + Dead Sea (1 night). Minimum length for a genuine two-country experience.

12 days: Adds Mykonos (2 nights) after Santorini, or the Desert Castles east of Amman and an extra Petra day in Jordan.

14 days: Covers all the above plus the classical mainland Greece circuit (Delphi and Olympia) or Aqaba Red Sea beach in Jordan.

Getting Between Greece and Jordan

Direct flights from Athens (ATH) to Amman (AMM) take approximately 2 hours 30 minutes and operate several times weekly. This connection is included in the package price.

Best Time to Travel

March through May and September through October suit both countries. Greece's Acropolis avoids August heat and Santorini ferries have available space. Jordan's Petra and Wadi Rum are mild and comfortable. July and August: Athens midday reaches 38 degrees and Wadi Rum reaches 40 degrees. December through February: Santorini island hotels are mostly closed (off-season); Athens, Delphi, and mainland sites remain open. Petra can be cold and occasionally icy in the Siq.
